Synergy

“Synergy is the finest contemporary music group in Australia, and I am proud to be associated with it.”

Sunday Soundscapes Synergy concert brochure coverSunday Soundscapes #3 of 2011: Synergy
Timothy Constable, Alison Pratt, Bree van Reyk, Joshua Hill

Synergy is a world of sound with percussion at its heart. With an enviable international reputation as one of Australia’s finest and most versatile music projects, Synergy has performed at festivals throughout Europe, Asia and the United States, as well as most of Australia’s mainstage recital and performance venues.

Core members – Timothy Constable, Alison Pratt, and Bree van Reyk – are all award-winning and internationally acclaimed exponents in their own right.

Synergy is both subtle and a tour de force, descriptive, emotional, melodic and rhythmically athletic. Unique musical architectures are sculpted from such elements as the whisper of crumpled cloth, infectious beats, the delicate beauty of a tiny bell, or the engulfing sounds of large drums, cymbals and gongs.

Synergy is at home on world music stages, contemporary/ experimental art venues, pop and rock concerts, and opera and recital stages. Its expansive vision of percussion, together with the exceptionally wide musical experience of the members, has allowed the group to work together with a diverse and exemplary family of artists from around the world.

Paul Goodchild (trumpet) and Clemens Leske (piano)

Power and Grace … these words best describe this second concert in the Sunday Soundscapes concert series.

Two of Australia’s most electrifying performers, Paul Goodchild (trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn) and Clemens Leske (piano), took centre stage in a showcase of the exhilarating sound and often-neglected tonal beauty of the trumpet.

The program appealed to a wide range of musical tastes as it included jazz inspired pieces by Leonard Bernstein and Jacques Ibert alongside classical works by Bohuslav Martinu, Max Reger and Franz Liszt.

The title, Ignition:Positive, is taken directly from an Australian work on the program written by Matthew Hindson. Other highlights are the dazzling Slavische Fantasie, demonstrating the beautiful lyrical tone and effervescent properties of the cornet and a welcome appearance of the flugelhorn in a work byMichael Nyman, the popular motion picture composer of Peter Greenway films.

This event raised $1,700 in auction sales.

A collaborative work of eight canvases that were part of the Calligraffiti Exhibition at the Bunker Cartoon Gallery in December 2010 were auctioned off on Friday 7 January, with proceeds going towards seating in the new performance space at the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium.

The eight canvases (each measuring 900x1200mm) were created by local graffiti artist Ashley Johnston and calligraphers Robyn Lawrence and Colleen Little.

Jazz duo John Mostyn (guitar) and Chris Frater (saxophone), both well known to Conservatorium patrons, gave the party a real zing!
