Meet Anna Plunkett Registed Music Therapist and Music Educator
Many in our community will already know Anna through the Early Childhood Music program and piano tuition she has delivered at the Con for almost four years.
Alongside her work as a music educator, Anna is also a qualified Registered Music Therapist with the Australian Music Therapy Association. She completed her Master of Music Therapy at the University of Queensland 20 years ago and offers music therapy programs privately or through eligible NDIS funding.
Music therapy uses activities such as instrument exploration, improvising, singing, songwriting, listening and movement to create therapeutic change. There is no expectation of musical ability, with sessions tailored to the needs of each individual or group.
Anna has experience working with children, adolescents, adults and older people across areas including autism, ADHD, disability, rehabilitation, dementia, mental health, social isolation and wellbeing.
Anna is passionate about the way music can support our brains, behaviour and wellbeing, and its ability to create physical, emotional, mental and social change.
What is Music Therapy?
Music Therapy uses the properties of music making (such as instrument exploration and playing, improvising, singing, song writing, listening and movement), in a supportive environment, to create therapeutic change. Music therapy does not focus on musical skill specifically, and there is no expectation of any musical ability.
A Registered Music Therapist uses a combination of their clinical knowledge, research and musical skills, along with the intrinsic neurological and emotional relationship we innately have with music to help individuals or groups reach their therapeutic goals.
Anna will be running music therapy sessions from the Conservatorium. To learn more or enquire about sessions, please contact the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium.
